You can download the sample project created for this blog post from GitHub. This simple project contains a bonsai tree and butterfly that make heavy use of iridescence and translucency.
Before you start creating your absurdly beautiful scenes, there are a few important clauses to be aware of. First, this master node only works within the HDRP. Second, there are no shading equivalents in the Lightweight Render Pipeline LWRP for the advanced shading options you will find on this node.
The example butterfly project also uses HDRP. Select the High Definition RP package from the package list. In the top right, you will see an Update to button. Make sure the version to the right of that is 4. Right away, you will see some of the new input options available. This means your object will look like it has a thin transparent layer of shiny sealant on top of it. Imagine painting an epoxy coating onto your mesh.
One popular use of Coat Mask is when creating materials to simulate the look of car paint. Even though CoatMask is a default input on the Lit Master Node, make sure you only use it if it is important for creating the look you are going for.
Increasing Coat Mask to anything past 0 will increase the cost of your Shader. BentNormal allows for input of a special type of map that improves the indirect lighting GI for your asset. When used in combination with an AO map it can also provide specular occlusion, which means that you can add occlusion into the reflection on your mesh. However, for your bent normal maps to work correctly, make sure you use Cosine distribution when generating them. You can access these settings by selecting the gear icon in the top right corner of the Shader Graph Master Node.
Selecting Custom creates a new input on the Master Node, giving full Specular Occlusion control to the user.Morten MikkelsenNovember 20, A recent Unity Labs paper introduces a new framework for blending normal maps that is easy and intuitive for both technical artists and graphics engineers.
This approach overcomes several limitations of traditional methods. Since the introduction of normal mapping in real-time computer graphics, combining or blending normal maps in a mathematically correct way to get visually pleasing results has been a difficult problem for even very experienced graphics engineers. Historically, people often blend normals in world space, which produces incorrect and less than satisfactory results.
This new approach is easy and intuitive for both technical artists and graphics engineers, even where different forms of bump maps are combined. In modern computer graphics, material layering is critical to achieve rich and complex environments. To do this, we need support for bump mapping across multiple sets of texture coordinates as well as blending between multiple bump maps.
Traditionally, real-time graphics has supported bump mapping on only one set of texture coordinates. Bump mapping requires data for every vertex to be pre-calculated and stored tangent space. Supporting additional sets of texture coordinates would require proportional amounts of extra storage per vertex.
In HDRP, traditional tangent space, per vertex, is used for the first set of texture coordinates to support strict compliance with MikkTSpace.
This is required for difficult cases such as baked normal maps made for low-polygonal hard surface geometry. For all subsequent sets of texture coordinates, we calculate tangent space on the fly in the pixel shader. Doing so allows us to support normal mapping across all sets of texture coordinates as well as using it with procedural geometry and advanced deformers beyond simple skinning.
Scaling in the vertex shader
Correct blending is achieved by accumulating surface gradients as described in the paper. Up until now, this framework has been available only when using shaders that are built into HDRP. However, a prototype version made for Shader Graph is now available on Github in a sample scene made with Unity The framework itself is implemented entirely as subgraphs for Shader Graph, and each subgraph is made with only built-in nodes.
By adhering to this framework, every single form of bump map produces a surface gradient, which allows for uniform processing. This makes it much easier to correctly blend. The sample comes with several graphs that use the framework.

But I can't seem to get that calculation factoring in the rotation of the rings. At the moment, the shadow falls as straight lines behind the planet but, if the rings are rotated steeply this won't look right.
This is because the shader isn't taking into account the rings' rotation. I need to multiply the current vertex position by, effectively, the quaternion rotation of the rings. I have tried all of the matrix rotations on this page Anyone care to try this shader out and see if you can help? That would be great! I might have made this seem more complicated than I needed to, sorry; What I'd like to know is how to rotate a vertex by the object's rotation. Adding textures and other complex interactions. Adding in a texture or other assets is also really easy, just create a node of that asset type and connect it! Your Shader Graph shader is just like a normal shader in Unity.
Right click on any object in the Inspector and choose Create Material. You can create multiple materials from the same shader. You can easily expose parameters in your shader so they can be overwritten in each material you create from your shader.This shader modifies the RGB color value of the texture sample, and then uses it together with the unmodified alpha value to set the final color.
You can implement a grayscale texture shader by modifying the color value of a texture sample before you write it to the final output color. Before you begin, make sure that the Properties window and the Toolbox are displayed. Create a basic texture shader, as described in How to: Create a basic texture shader. This makes room for the node that's added in the next step. Add a Desaturate node to the graph. In the Toolboxunder Filtersselect Desaturate and move it to the design surface.
Calculate the grayscale value by using the Desaturate node. By default, the Desaturate node fully desaturates the input color, and uses the standard luminance weights for greyscale conversion. You can change how the Desaturate node behaves by changing the value of the Luminance property, or by only partially desaturating the input color. To partially desaturate the input color, provide a scalar value in the range [0,1 to the Percent terminal of the Desaturate node.
Connect the grayscale color value to the final color. The following illustration shows the completed shader graph and a preview of the shader applied to a cube. In this illustration, a plane is used as the preview shape, and a texture has been specified to better demonstrate the effect of the shader. Also, the mask should then move according to the world coordinates of a given game-object so that i can use, let's say, a sphere to control the position of the mask that blends the two materials. So you need to get the distance from the world position from the sphere's center. If you want a smooth fade from the surface of the sphere to the center then divide that distance by the radius of the sphere. If you want to drive that fade by a texture you'll likely want a ramp texture rather than something like a particle texture, or you'll need to convert your normalized 0. Hello bgolus, that makes sense, but i do not know how to fetch the sphere position to the nodes in the shader graph.
Would you mind giving me more specific example? To be more clear, i want to use a different game object to drive the blend mask.
Get just the object's rotation matrix in shader (without view or projection included)
For example, i have the shader with the two blending textures applied to a plane, and i have a separate game object a sphere or anything that i will move nearby the plane. I am expecting to see the blending mask moving on the plane surface according to the sphere world space position.
You'd need to write a script that tracks the object and passes that information via a Vector property to the appropriate material, or sets it as a global shader property.
For my own shaders I would likely use a single Vector4 value with the position as the xyz and the radius of the sphere as the w.
